As Released by the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation (IBSF):
Let the pinnacle of sliding begin – in just 14 days, the world’s top bobsleigh and skeleton athletes will come face to face with the sports’ latest breakout stars at the IBSF World Championships 2025 in Lake Placid (USA) hosted by the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (Olympic Authority).
Truly global
Over 300 athletes from 38 nations – the highest number of countries ever seen at an IBSF World Championships – will come together on 6-16 March at the legendary Mt Van Hoevenberg sliding track.
With the most number of curves – 20 – of any competitive sliding track in the world, Mt Van Hoevenberg requires absolute precision by athletes tackling the famous “Devil’s Highway” (curves 4-9), Benham’s Bend (curve 14) and the “The Heart” omega (curves 19-20) to go down in the IBSF World Championships history books.
2025 – special sport milestones
This year, Mt Van Hoevenberg at Lake Placid – with its long and storied Olympic and World Championships history -will also be celebrating several important milestones.
“We’ll be marking 25 years of women’s World Championship bobsleigh and skeleton as Lake Placid hosts its eleventh World Championships, while honoring the remarkable legacy of this venue as host to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics with less than a year to go to Milano Cortina 2026,” explained Ivo Ferriani, President of IBSF.
Lake Placid – festival atmosphere
Lake Placid promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans at one of the most iconic venues in the world. The 2025 IBSF World Championships will offer a festival-style experience with live entertainment, food vendors, and interactive exhibits. The Opening Ceremony on 5 March at the Olympic Center’s historic Herb Brooks Arena will mark the official start of the event, bringing together athletes and officials to celebrate the beginning of competition the following day. At Mt Van Hoevenberg, the Heart Festival Tent, styled as a Biergarten, will feature an international art exhibit, athlete autograph sessions, sponsor activations and several engaging fun activities like hands-on experiences with bobsleds, skeleton sleds, and historic trophies.
“The IBSF Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships is a unique ten-day sliding festival – where the most thrilling sports on ice take center stage, moving hearts and minds with fascinating human stories and journeys!” underlined Ferriani.
“On behalf of our Olympic Regional Development Authority team, we are excited to welcome the world’s best bobsled and skeleton athletes to Lake Placid for two weeks of elite competition at the highest level,” said Olympic Authority Director of Communications and spokesperson, Darcy Rowe Norfolk. “This is a remarkable opportunity to showcase our historic, world class venues while delivering a memorable experience to athletes and fans from around the world and our local community. Hosting an event of this caliber – especially in a pre-Olympic year – not only reinforces our commitment to excellence but also extends our Olympic legacy into the future.”
