The International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA) recently announced their annual ISHY awards at the 2024 ISHA Conference in Boston. The Lake Placid Olympic Museum won Category D: Education Programming for its Mock IOC Election. The awards were given to 10 categories within the communities of sports museums, halls of fame and organizations for the preservation of sports heritage.
About the Olympic Host City Mock Election program:
The Olympic Host City Mock Election is designed to engage students in the intricate selection process of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for electing future Host Cities for the Olympic Games. This educational initiative simplifies the complex journey of becoming a Candidate City into five interactive activities: Candidate City selection, research, key game components, marketing strategies, and final presentations.
Throughout this program, students take on the roles of aspiring Candidate City Organizing Committees, working collaboratively to develop unique and imaginative presentations that represent their bid to host the Olympic Games. Educators serve as the mock IOC panel, evaluating the presentations on creativity and overcoming assigned challenges, to ultimately decide which group will be awarded the honor of hosting the next Olympic Games.
The Olympic Host City Mock Election aims to foster creativity, enhance problem-solving skills, and promote effective teamwork among students. By participating in this program, students gain a deeper understanding of the Olympic selection process while developing essential skills that will benefit them in their academic futures.
“We are thrilled to receive this award from the International Sports Heritage Association,” states Courtney Bastain, Lake Placid Olympic Museum Director. “The journey of creating this program has been enjoyable, filled with creativity and collaboration that brings our team together. This recognition motivates us to continue innovating and fostering programs that inspire a love for sports in young minds.”
